LED Street Lighting
City staff was tasked with finding ways to reduce energy costs. Funding for public street lighting is increasingly difficult as electric costs rise and available municipal funds get tighter. Light-emitting diode or LED street lights could create significant energy and maintenance savings. The primary benefits of LED's are: reducing energy consumption, longer lifetime, reducing greenhouse emissions CO2 and light trespass.
The City of Lowell has installed two LED street lights at the corners of N. Jefferson & High and N. Jefferson & North Street as a test area for public comments.

38.37 tons CO2 |
| Light Trespass: |
| Because LED's emit directional light, we have more control over what we light (streets and sidewalks) and what we don't (the night sky), reducing light pollution and wasted energy. |
Full implementation of LED's would cut Lowell's public lighting energy use by 69% and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 85.49 tons CO2 annually.
