A Firearm Purchase Permit allows the holder to legally purchase a handgun.  It is a permit required by the state and federal government.

Residents of the City of Lowell must obtain a Firearms Purchase Permit from the Lowell Police Department prior to the purchase of a handgun. Residents of Lowell and Vergennes Township must obtain the Firearms Purchase Permit from the Kent County Sheriff’s Department.

To obtain a Firearm Purchase Permit, city residents must appear in person at the Lowell Police Department, between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm Monday through Friday.  A resident must present a valid, photographic identification card at the time of request for the permit.

There is no cost for the permit.  A Firearm Purchase Permit is valid for 10 days.
